Regarding documentation, Handbrake is set to convert soft subtitles to SSA to embed them into a mp4. Now that I have found the right settings for video and audio, I'd like to embed 2 or 3 subtitles languages into mp4 files archiving old tv series. I'm playing around with MP4 as I've found is widely supported.
